When trying to gain body weight, athletes should
focus on increasing muscle mass (lean body weight) while minimizing fat gain.
This requires stimulating the synthesis of both muscle protein and glycogen. A
single bout of resistance exercise can lower muscle glycogen levels 30-40%. Low
muscle glycogen levels can hurt performance, delay recovery and impede muscle
